Benaki Contemporaries

The Benaki Museum, one of Europe’s most innovative cultural institutions, houses an extensive collection covering Greek Culture from the Paleolithic era to the present as well as Islamic, Chinese, Korean and Pre-Columbian artefacts.

The Museum also offers educational programmes to thousands of children and adults, while it publishes dozens of books and catalogues every year. benaki.gr

The 'Benaki Contemporaries' programme was designed to encourage young people to engage with history and explore contemporary cultural experiences.

The visual identity of the 'Benaki Contemporaries' is treated not as a brand but as an organic, ever-changing system. The original qualities of the Benaki Museum –the Museum started as a collection– are reflected through an assembly of letters, colours, shapes, lines, materials, and so on. Part of the 'Benaki Contemporaries' alphabet consists of Benaki Museum exhibits, e.g. a Pre-Columbian head, an Islamic tile, a Greek vessel or a Chinese sculpture. In every output, the identity changes, takes new form, becomes a reference to a discourse on appropriation, identity, form, essentially a dialogue with different times in history.

In order to create a personal relationship with our members, and at the same time be environmentally aware, we decided to design a sustainable welcome pack using eco-friendly materials. For example, we used biodegradable plastics for member cards, and almost everything inside is made from recycled materials.
